Between Tamagotchi and Kringle: What are the challenges of managing a team of different generations?

The issue of attitudes to work of different generations, behavioral habits in processes and approaches is one of the most popular topics for discussion and research.
Let's first look at "who is who" by generation. It is incorrect to fully transfer the Western model to Ukrainian realities due to different historical and other conditions, but the basis remains.

  • Baby Boomers (born 1946-1965 ) - Stability, respect and mentoring.
  • Generation X (born 1965-1980 ) - Career growth and autonomy.
  • Millennials (born 1981-1996 ) - Flexibility, development and values.
  • Generation Z (born 1997-2012 ) - Technology, speed and social responsibility.
  • Alpha (born 2013 - ≈2025 ) - Digital, work-life balance.

Now let's talk about work.

Baby Boomers
Representatives of this generation were born in the postwar years and grew up under authoritarianism. They are characterized by conservatism and find change difficult. It is also difficult to adapt to the times of great digitalization, they do not accept the possibility of remote work, and there is a significant gap in behavior and thinking between them and Z.

How to cooperate: ✅
Introduce innovations and changes gradually, devote time to training, and don't be afraid to involve younger colleagues in mentoring.

Generation X
Stability is very important to them because they have gone through economic crises. This influenced their approach to work. It seems that representatives of this generation constantly want to work harder and harder because it is "a guarantee of stability and recognition." They also tend to work in one place for a long time.

How to cooperate: ✅
Create good working and career development conditions, show clear prospects and comfortable conditions without bureaucracy.

The Millennials generation
They are active and ambitious. They value flexibility, career growth, and try to establish a work-life balance.

How to cooperate: ✅
Don't put them in a standard office environment with a clear schedule - such specialists need flexibility in processes and involvement in making important decisions in the company. They can quickly burn out due to the constant desire for self-realization.

Generation Z
This is probably where employers face the biggest challenges. Representatives of this generation have grown up in a digitalized and fast-paced environment. For them, a smartphone is a household item, not something "wow". Because of this, it can be difficult for them to concentrate on one thing, and it's hard to keep their attention.

How to cooperate: ✅
Give quick feedback, use interactive learning formats, build a clear corporate ethic, and, of course, use modern technologies in your work.

And a few more facts about Z

✔️77% of this generation (according to Deloitte) need work-life balance
✔️74% of managers (according to ResumeBuilder.com) consider this group to be the most difficult to work with
✔️головна reason for leaving - they are very easy to offend

Generation Alpha
The future is coming. Now these are children who are not yet fully employed, but soon will be. They will become a new challenge for HR managers. These people have grown up in the age of automation, gamification, social media, and cannot imagine a future without AI. Therefore, "alpha" for rapid changes, work in several projects, and a high level of awareness when choosing a company.

How to cooperate: ✅
Interactive learning (VR, AR, gamification) is a must-have. You should also not forget about the full inclusion of AI in the work of these specialists. Support freelance or hybrid work. You will also need resources for the development of EQ and soft skills among colleagues.

So what does the labor market expect?

Digital!
No need for long explanations here - we are moving towards rapid automation and robotization.

A project for years?
Not at all! Short-term cooperation will become increasingly popular.

Corporate Culture and Ethics
For professionals, equality, inclusiveness and sustainable development will become the main principles when choosing a place of work.

Rapid changes
This process is already irreversible, so it is important to learn the ability to adapt.
It seems that time is going in x2 mode, so in the future we will have a new picture of the future with a change in our behavioral work habits and principles 🔥🤝
