How to assemble a good team or what to do to make the cube work? - Anybusiness Consult

How to assemble a good team or what to do to make the cube work?

Often, successful projects or companies are not run by one person, but by a team. And this applies to any field of work. Creating your "dream team" is not easy, but if you approach this process with an understanding of the different types of roles in the team and know which player is missing, it will simplify the task. Let's try to figure it out together.

In the 60s and 70s of the twentieth century, Raymond Meredith Belbin, PhD, created a model of team roles. It consists of 9 types, which in turn are divided into 3 groups each.

  1. Intellectual roles: Idea generator, Analyst-strategist, Specialist
  2. Social roles: Soul of the team, Resource researcher, Coordinator
  3. Action roles: Action roles are Motivator, Implementer, Pedant.

Understanding your own role in the team and the role of others is a component of successful team building, promotes team development and balances strengths and weaknesses. Let's take a closer look at each of the roles.

Idea generator

Usually, this is a team leader. A person in such a role is active, decisive, a strategist, always looking for the best ways to solve problems, and has excellent communication skills.

Analyst-strategist

He always analyzes the risks and opportunities of a project, and is especially useful in strategic planning. He can often be an introvert, but with a "cold mind".

Specialist

Acts as an expert and is happy to share their knowledge. In a team, they may be responsible for identifying errors or the technical side, and are attentive to details. Such people do not easily delegate their authority or tasks to others.

The soul of the team

He is a team member with soft traits, very responsive and diplomatic. He does not like conflicts, so he helps to resolve them and creates a friendly atmosphere.

Resource researcher

A person with an active attitude and good negotiation skills. A team player in this role has extroverted traits, and therefore quickly establishes contact and easily maintains a conversation.

Coordinator

The name of this role speaks for itself. This is the person who controls all work processes, monitors deadlines and progress. He or she skillfully distributes tasks because he or she knows his or her team and everyone's capabilities.

Motivator

A person with a high level of "charge" and positive thinking. He always thinks about success and motivates other colleagues with it, but is very cautious and emotional about failures.

Realizer

A player with a high level of responsibility and discipline. Be sure that you can safely entrust such a person with important tasks without worrying, because he or she will definitely fulfill them.

Pedant

A person in this role is prone to constantly checking whether everything is in order, is attentive to details and a perfectionist. But at the same time, they are very calm, even though they worry about the quality and result of their work.

It should be noted that one person does not necessarily combine only one of the roles. For example, someone can be the soul of the team and at the same time an implementer. It's just that in such circumstances, one role is more pronounced and the other less so. Therefore, in the process of team building, it is very important not to gather everyone with the same traits, but to maintain a balance. This will allow one to cover the weaknesses of the other. Accordingly, also consider how the roles can interact with each other.

Using the Belbin model will improve the quality and results of your teamwork due to the psychological component.
